Role Overview

 

You will be responsible for working alongside product managers and business change project teams to clearly understand the product vision and be capable of translating this into IT Solution Designs.

The successful Solution Architect will have experience of working within both a waterfall and agile project delivery methodology. Using the appropriate techniques and tools you will provide technical advice, guidance and leadership for IT projects within Hermes to translate the needs and aspirations of the business into technical systems solutions, whilst aligning to the longer term IT strategic vision.

 

The post holder will work closely with the Enterprise Architecture function to help shape and promote the architecture roadmap and to deliver solutions that adhere to the agreed architecture principles.

 

The ideal applicant should be able to demonstrate a strong technical background in a broad range of technology domains and be able to demonstrate working at an authorative technical level driving forward architecture vision and strategy with the organisation. The applicant must also be able to demonstrate strong stakeholder management and be able to represent IT in initial business engagement activities.

 

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the initial scoping, investigating, design  and estimating of project concepts and ideas

  • Identify and translate the initial business needs for an IT solution. A key responsibility is to work with stakeholders to translate their requirements into high level concepts.

  • Build strong relationships with key stakeholders within the business, Change Management and IT teams to ensure the successful initiation of new ideas.

  • The Solution Architect will work with stakeholders to identify, model, and then document the technical concept producing logical and physical diagrams and business domain details.

 

  • Define new technology concepts creating Solution Definition and Solution Architecture documentation to set out the solution framework to support the business initiative.

 

  • Represent the design at the Architecture Review board working with the architecture team to ensure good practice and adherence to principles is met.

  • Translate complex technical concepts.  Able to explain such concepts and any architectural complexities to business stakeholders and technical teams.

 

  • Engage with the business and product owner. The Solution Architect acts as the technical consultant and will demonstrate very good connections across the business departments. They should be viewed by the business as the go-to within IT to discuss ideas, issues and risks. They will be able to balance technology and business issues communicating appropriately.
  • You will understand the wider business and using appropriate tools you will conduct research to further refine your understanding of the business ideas and needs.

  • Governance, the Solution Architect works with the project team to ensure that the solution adheres to the architectural framework and that any deviations are signed off by the appropriate authority.

  • May act as consultant during a Projects implementation phase, to ensure a successful transition into production.

  • To ensure the non-functional requirements (NFRs) are accurately represented in the design and the subsequent build and implementation adheres to these NFRs.

  • Attend weekly architecture meetings to provide progress updates and contribute ideas to promote better ways of working that lead to increased agility, improved quality and/ or reduced costs.

Qualifications

  • 3-6 years previous Solution Architecture or technical lead experience, in a respected organisation (experience within the logistics sector would be advantageous but is not essential).
  • Degree in a scientific discipline (preferably Computer Science or Engineering) or possessing relevant professional experience.
  • Worked as a technical lead on several projects of varying size and complexity throughout the full project delivery lifecycle.
  • Familiarity with a variety of Enterprise Architecture (EA) tools and techniques, such as data modelling, structured analysis & design, use cases, Object Oriented analysis & design.
  • Experience with analysis in an agile/ scrum team would be an advantage to describe requirements in terms of Themes, Epics, User Stories and acceptance criteria. An understanding of terms such as backlog, burndown, and velocity.
  • Knowledge of systems integration standards including ESB, SOA, XML, Micro Services, APIs and messaging solutions.
  • Knowledge & experience of testing for non-functional requirements.
  • Knowledge and experience of build, deployment, change and release processes and automation.
  • Experience of web technologies, enterprise software platforms and database driven applications such as Java EE/ Oracle
  • Experience of designing and deploying scalable, highly available, and fault tolerant systems on AWS or similar cloud based technology.
  • The successful SA will have solid experience working ideally within both a Waterfall and Agile project delivery methodology and will have worked closely with Project Managers, Developers and Tester’s, Product Manager's and business stakeholders.
  • Experience of online environments and digital services including web and mobile an advantage.
  • Excellent understanding of technology life cycles, concepts and practices required to implement effective information systems.
  • Be able to demonstrate the principles of SOA and/or Micro Services and translate these into good solution design would be an advantage.

 

  • Good communication skills (verbal, written/listening, presentation) including the ability to communicate to both technical and business colleagues, with good listening skills, clarifying and challenging where required.
  • Must be able to discuss complex issues in a plain and concise manner.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, agile environment and yet be able to retain quality.
  • Self-motivated, proactive and drives for action and results. Has the ability to cope with pressure and problems.
  • Experience of dealing with third party suppliers, and stakeholder engagement at all levels.
  • Have a structured and self-disciplined approach to work, effective at managing own time with good planning skills.
  • Willingness to stretch themselves and continually improve their skills and knowledge.
  • Must be a team player, contributing knowledge and expertise to all aspects of work carried out by the department as required to achieve department and corporate objectives. Good at building relationships across the business.
  • Encourages and supports continuous improvement in the performance of the team, coaching and mentoring junior members in the achievement of those objectives.
  • Knowledge of potential sources of risk and their impact on project success, combined with good problem solving skills.
  • An ability to identify, analyse and quickly assimilate information is essential. Must be capable of researching complex issues with minimal direction and be able to assist in the production of well-argued recommendations.
  • Continually seeking improvements and encouraging innovation in others while responding positively to change. Helps create an environment where future needs are identified and new ideas encouraged.
  • Experience of line management of small to medium sized teams would be an advantage, including coaching and development of team members.
