Role overview:

  • As a key member of the HR Senior team which is a centre of Excellence model this role as Head of HR Operations is to lead the Operations HR Business Partners to support the operation through on-going development and embedding of the HR Business partner approach which will facilitate change, growth and drive for the business to deliver it results through our people and ensure our Operation is continually supported through
  • To deliver effective Human Resources Business solutions throughout the operational functions to support Hermes to achieve its current and future objectives and high growth plans
  • Acting as the principal partner on the operational leadership teams covering all aspects of people management and development, setting and monitoring standards across the organisation through the Business Partner and Service model
  • Developing, managing and leading a confident, competent and proactive HR Business Partnering in operations,  that meets the diverse needs of its customers and demonstrates its own effectiveness, efficiency and value for money.  Providing leadership, role modelling, coaching, setting plans and monitoring performance/delivery of own team and the central and specialist HR teams as appropriate
  • Working closely with CoE to ensure we as a team delivers best practice, innovative solutions through a shared and collaborative working environment
  • Contributing to the wider HR team, feeding back to the HR team and Director with the operations business updates, plans and requirements
  • Lead a process of organisation development for operations that plans, communicates, and integrates the results of OD planning throughout the organisation
  • Develop effective formal consultation machinery and lead consultations/ negotiations as appropriate, mainly at local level, and together with HR at national level, to maintain a productive industrial relations climate and a professional and constructive working relationship with representatives
  • Establish a strong and valued presence on the Operational Leadership teams – nationally and regionally
  • Establish and maintain appropriate means of measuring necessary aspects of HR business partnering and services development, setting SLA’s where applicable for own team delivery and central HR team and specialists
  • Lead and coach the BP and Advisor team to raise their profile and embed a true partnering approach into the operations business.  Become a valued first point confidant
  • Develop and deliver HR metrics and analytics to review and find focused solutions, buy in and planning through the HR team and the Operation
  • Lead, manage and develop the HR Business Partner and Services Team (Operations) to ensure a commercial, highly motivated and high performing team that is capable of maintaining a strong professional presence and is proactive in supporting line managers to deliver their objectives and effectively manage change
  • Create a climate within the HR function that encourages innovation, and optimise the use of technology to streamline systems, enhance service delivery and reduce costs. Ensure the delivery to consistent standards of a comprehensive, reliable HR partnering service to Hermes
  • Feed business requirements into employment policies and practices, including Comp and Ben that help Hermes to achieve its objectives, and ensure implementation and integration into mainstream management practice when developed working with team to coach and up skill line managers
  • Work proactively with senior managers in Operations to help them articulate Hermes vision, values and goals, and identify key interventions that will accelerate enhanced performance across the business
  • Support design of, and manage roll out and compliance in Operations areas with a Hermes wide process of organisation development that addresses issues such as talent and succession planning, performance management, L&D Planning, superior workforce development, key employee retention, organisation design, and change leadership
  • Provide advice and guidance to managers and staff on all aspects of ER.  Managing disciplinaries and grievances etc.
  • Lead engagement efforts with the Operational business




  • Degree standard of education or equivalent experience with membership of appropriate professional body and evidence of continuing professional development
  • Thorough, up to date understanding of recent and forthcoming employment legislation, modern HR practices through Centre of Excellent and BO model, and their practical operational and strategic application
  • Strong union and negotiating experience in multi-site operations at local and national level as key contact in this area
  • Significant experience of embedding a Business Partnering model into a UK wide, multi-site Operational Business
  • TUPE experience
  • Broad understanding of change leadership, resourcing, comp and ben, and OD interventions and their application as tools for organisational transformation
  • Strong commercial / business acumen with the ability to influence strategic thinking/direction but main focus on and ability in operational delivery and metrics
  • Strong remote team leadership skills


  • Excellent influencing, communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interface at all levels.  A person of sound judgment, able to establish a high level of credibility in the organisation and act as a trusted leader and advisor
  • Flexible approach and manage issues as and when they arise Leadership and change leadership
  • Business commercial knowledge and skills
  • Ability to deal sensitively with difficult issues and personalities
  • Able to lead, motivate and develop a team; ensure delivery to defined standards

  • Consultation and negotiation skills


  • Experience as a successful senior HR practitioner in a multi-site and unionised environment
  • Geographical mobile and able to work away from home on occasions
  • Demonstrable senior track record in HR practice in particular in HRBP model embedding/change in operational environment
  • Ability to step up to HRD role to support as and when needed
